Have you ever thought about making your own cigarettes in order to save money?
If you have pondered the idea and are thinking about getting into it, you’re in luck.
Today, a new Cut Rate Tobacco store will be opening its doors to the people of Putnam County.
Located at 820 N. Locust St., between O’Reilly’s Auto Parts and Goodwill, the specialty tobacco store will offer products of all sorts, including the machines to make your own cigarettes.
“It’s a big, growing area for us. Everyone’s looking to save money today and making your own is one way to do that,” said store manager Jake Adams, about making homemade cigarettes. “We have a large selection of tobacco and tubes you can use to make a cigarette that replicates the taste and consistency of the regular manufactured cigarettes.”
With these new machines, cigarettes are not “rolled” anymore, they are actually injected into the tubes, he added. And most people can make a carton of their own in less than an hour.
Adams will even show people how to make the cigarettes at the store, that way they know exactly what they’re doing at home.
But aside from carrying make-your-own cigarette machines, the store offers a wide selection of manufactured cigarettes (Marlboro’s, Camel’s, etc. and discounted brands about $15 to $20 cheaper than usual) chewing tobacco and premium cigars, with a 16′x6′ walk-in humidor to keep the cigars at perfect levels of humidity and temperature.
“We have, by far, the largest selection of premium cigars in the area,” said Adams.
The store will also be featuring a small number of hookahs and will sell shisha, or flavored tobacco, which is smoked through a hookah.
“People are unaware of their options with tobacco use, and they get to know more by visiting and seeing our selection and different products,” said Adams.
If for any reason one doesn’t find what they’re looking for on the shelves of Cut Rate, they are encouraged to make requests for products they want, which will be ordered by the store.
“We are very open to taking requests,” said Adams. “Let us know what you want and we’ll find it.”
Cut Rate Tobacco, owned by Michael and Beverly Adams (Jake’s parents), opened their first store approximately six or seven years ago in Napoleon. The pair also have stores in Bowling Green and Bryan.
“My dad’s been looking at Ottawa for quite a while,” said Adams.
After ditching a job in public accounting in Columbus, Adams decided to join the family business.
“I didn’t like sitting behind a desk and I liked what my dad was doing, so I decided to hop on board,” he said.
Once the store opens, one to two positions will be available for hire, said Adams, as he will be operating the Ottawa location.
Today, area residents are invited to stop out for Cut Rate Tobacco’s opening day.
“We have the best selection, the best products and when you walk in the door, you know you’re getting the best deal you can get,” he said.
