More Trying to Quit Smoking

Since last summer smokers in Idaho have been able to request a free four-week supply of nicotine patches, gum or lozenges to help them kick the habit.  A record number of people in the Gem State have taken advantage of the program.  So many in fact, the funding is gone until the July 1st.

Jerry Higgins smoked cigarettes for 43 years that is until March 27, 2008.  He says he started to light up when he was in the Army.quit

“In basic training.  If you smoked him you could take a break, if you didn’t you couldn’t.  So everybody started smoking,” said Higgins, who quit smoking in March of 2008.

Jerry is 61 today.  He started smoking when he was 18.  But after years of smoking, the health problems caught up with him so he decided to kick the habit.

“You can’t do the things you want to do.  You can’t mow the lawn without stopping three or four times because you can’t breathe.  You can’t walk around the block because you can’t breathe.  You can’t do anything because you can’t breathe.  And you get tired of not breathing so you quit,” said Higgins

On average, 1,300 people per year request information to quit smoking in Idaho.  That number doubled this year when federal taxes on all tobacco products went up.  Jennifer Robinson, a physician assistant at the cancer center at PMC, says there are more than just health benefits to quitting.

“The financial gain.  Not spending $4.00 a day can certainly add up especially in this particular economy,” said Robinson.

Jerry says he took a drug called Chantix.  It attaches to key nicotine receptors in your brain and blocks the nicotine.  But he says it wasn’t the medicine that helped, it’s that he wanted to quit.

“You can take anything you want.  You can take the patches, you can take the medicine that affects your brain, you can do it cold turkey but you have to want to quit.  And if you don’t want to quit you’re not going to,” said Higgins.

And if you want to quit now, immediate benefits include improved energy, taste and smell.  Just 24 hours after quitting your blood pressure drops.  After one year your lung function increases.  After five years you reduce your risk for heart attacks and strokes by 50 percent.  Jerry says he feels better than ever.

“I like it.  A hell of a lot better lifestyle than I had,” said Higgins.
