Banning tobacco use in parks

The Norman City Council will consider banning the use of tobacco in city parks in this week’s regular session.

The Council will meet in conference and regular session Tuesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Conference Room, and 6:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building Council Chambers, 201 W. Gray St.

At an earlier study session, council members said smoking in public parks is hazardous to health and the environment. Tobacco products discarded on the ground in parks also pose health hazards to children and pets, officials said. Because of its adverse effects, council members asked city staff to draft an ordinance banning cigarette smoking and other types of tobacco use in public parks.

Two years ago, the council shot down a similar proposed ban. The current ordinance, if adopted, would not include golf courses or parking lots where there’s a lower risk to children, officials said.

Among other items, the Council also will consider the annual budget of the Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau, with its detailed annual plan of work.

Currently on the consent docket, the Council will consider approval of:

· the following mayor’s appointments: Geoff Canty to the Greenbelt Commission; Jeff Marley to the Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau; Christ Jingozian to the Board of Parks Commissioners; Chris Lewis to the Planning Commission; Clint Williams, Mary Drywater, Jose Dela Cruz and Charlotte Gordon to the Human Rights Commission; Bob Paine to the Tree Board; and Roger Frech to the Central Oklahoma Master Conservancy District.

· a change order to a contract between the city and Nash Construction Company for the FYE speed table construction projects, decreasing the contract amount by $16,400;

· a final plat for Summit Valley Addition; a final site development plan and final plat for Trailwoods Addition, Section 4

· a $245,880 contract between the city and CP-Y, Inc., to provide engineering design services for the Franklin Road bridge over Little River and budget appropriation.

· proclamations of the mayor, proclaiming the week of June 21-27 as Amateur Radio Week; and proclaiming the month of June as National Homeownership Month in the City of Norman.
