Growth of social networking, smoking

Two MSU studies focusing on social networking sites such as YouTube, are helping shape how people understand the Internet, YouTuberesearchers said.

MSU researchers have applied for a $750,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study visitors of major social networking sites, such as YouTube and Facebook, said Cliff Lampe, a contributor to the project and an assistant professor in the MSU Deparment of Telecommunication, Information Studies and Media.

If the researchers are able to obtain the grant, Lampe said they hope the study can shed new light on how the audiences of social networking websites have evolved over time.

“In this work, we’ll show the change in the social network over time, using large social media networks like YouTube,” Lampe said. “Researchers find YouTube and similar user-generated content sites interesting because they are large-scale, relatively unmoderated connections between people.”

Hayder Radha, the principal investigator of the project, said he hopes the study will focus on other aspects of social networking as well.

“One example (of what) we’re going to research is how we will identify the most influential users or nodes in the big social networks,” Radha said.

Many social networks have such a significant impact on users that their existence cannot be ignored, Radha said.

“Social networks have changed the complexion and really the way we interact as human beings with each other,” he said.

“I think one of the fascinating things about social networks is that it’s at a stage where it’s influencing so many aspects of our lives.”

The smoking gun

Inappropriate videos on YouTube regarding sex and cigarette smoking are easily accessible to children and should be better regulated, another MSU study found.

These pro-smoking videos are all too common on YouTube and the website should take more action to prevent them, said Hye-Jin Paek, an associate professor of advertising, public relations and retailing, who conducted the study.

“YouTube has been criticized for its loose regulatory policy on such problematic content as amateur pornographic materials,” Paek said. “More attention paid by tobacco control experts will alarm YouTube folks to think about self-regulation.”

YouTube currently carries out its policy through its viewers, Paek said. A viewer can “flag” a video if they believe the content to be unsuitable for the public and usually the site’s staff reviews the video within 48 hours, then makes a decision on whether it should be removed.

Although, Paek said the control has been absent regarding these “smoking fetish” videos.

Doing a search for “smoking fetish” generates more than 2,200 hits, 85 percent of which are available for viewing without any age restrictions, she said.

Paek defines these videos as any lighting up or inhaling of a cigarette where a person is dressed in one of five fetish elements including gloves, boots, high heels, stockings or leather. Although the average child might not search for this directly, Paek states that the highest rated videos might appear on YouTube’s homepage.

“(The) major target audience of YouTube is teens,” she said. “One can easily assume that smoking fetish videos with high ratings and viewers are likely exposed to teens and children.”
