Californians Rejecting Legalization of Marijuana

Californians appear to have rejected an attempt to legalize the use of marijuana.marijuana

With 20 percent of the precincts reporting, 56 percent of voters who cast ballots had said “no” to Proposition 19, compared to 44 percent who had checked the “yes” box.

Prop. 19 would have allowed Californians 21 years and older to possess, cultivate or transport 1 ounce or less of marijuana for personal use.

People would have still been prohibited from possessing marijuana on school grounds, using it in public or smoking it when minors are present or distributing it to anyone under 21 years of age. Driving while impaired by marijuana use would have remained illegal.

The initiative also would permitted local government agencies to regulate and tax commercial production, distribution and sale of marijuana.

The proposition would have taken effect Nov. 3, the day after the election. However, it didn’t alter federal laws prohibiting marijuana use and Justice Department officials had said they would still enforce federal laws involving the substance.
